The absolute horror of cover music.

When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was familiar with cover bands. These were what we called ‘garage bands,’ a group of guys who enjoyed occasionally getting together to perform gigs at parties or special events for friends. The band members were proficient enough on their instruments to learn popular songs and play them well, but they weren’t songwriters. Some cover/garage bands were better than others. The best ones spent a lot of time rehearsing and could play a cover song with real gusto and flair. My brothers had cover bands play at their weddings,  and they put on great shows.

There is certainly nothing inherently wrong with a band playing and singing the music of other bands. If people don’t have the opportunity or the money to see their favorite band perform live, then seeing a cover band play those songs at a show can be a satisfying alternative.  I have had many enjoyable evenings listening and dancing to cover bands.

However, in the last couple of decades, an entire industry has been created to record and market cover music. This industry has nothing to do with weekend garage bands. Like all big industries, it is all about money- big money. The epicenter of the cover music industry is in Asia, where people are absolutely infatuated  over cover music. How and why this came to be I have no idea. Cover music is now so ingrained in the culture of Asia that it’s almost become part of the scenery.

I know this because I often visit restaurants, coffee shops, lounges, and bars,  and cover music is played in the majority of these establishments. Managers arrive in the morning, press ‘play’ on the computer screen where there is a ten-hour long playlist of cover songs and then forget about the music for the rest of the day.

Cover music, specifically the recored playlists which are widely played in eating and drinking venues, is an abomination, for many reasons. People, particularly Asians, need to wake up to this fact and demand to hear real music again.

First, the songs which are covered are all from English-speaking bands, usually from the United States and England. Most of the people in Asia listening to this music have not the slightest idea what the songs are about. The lyrics are unintelligible to them. Even locals who have a moderate grasp of English can’t understand the vast majority of songs which are played on the sound systems at their jobs. Even worse, they don’t even try to understand the words. The music, being played all day, every day, just becomes background noise, something that is not worth paying attention to.

Second, the young Asian crowds listening to the songs are wholly unfamiliar with the original songs. They know they’re listening to cover songs, but haven’t a clue who wrote the song in the first place. And they couldn’t care less. They don’t know that the original song was sung nothing like the cover version and had a completely different feeling to it.

Third , the bands whose songs are being covered, recorded, and marketed are not given their rightful  share of royalties. The musicians who wrote the songs don’t have the time, money, or energy to travel around the world with lawyers and try to rein in the huge and ever-growing cover music industry. Intellectual property rights, contracts, and royalties are not the concern of customers who sit and listen to cover music for hours on end in coffee shops in Seoul, Tokyo, and Saigon.

Next, the songs are all covered and sung by young women who change the tempo and feeling of the songs. You see, in Asia, they love what is called ‘relaxing’ music. Music in Asia is seen as  something which should calm the nerves after being out in traffic all afternoon. This is the main reason why Kenny G is a god-like figure throughout Asia. So, in the cover music factory, probably located somewhere in the suburbs of Tokyo or Seoul, the female singers take the songs and sing them in a mellow and ‘soft jazz’ kind of style. Now, that might work for some songs, but the cover music managers have their singers do this for all songs. I’ve been in Asia long enough now to realize that probably every Billboard Top 100 song from 1965 to the present day has been covered, recorded, and sold.  I used to think that they just preferred to cover the ‘soft rock’ hits from the 70s and 80s, like the Carpenters and Terry Jacks, but now I’ve heard nearly every genre covered.

For example, I recently heard the famous hit from The Police, ‘Every Breath You Take,’ being played as a cover song in a Japanese restaurant which I frequent. That song was always creepy; after all, it’s about a stalker. Sting sang it with just the right amount of menace in his voice to make it work. However, in the Asian cover version, the female crooner turns the song inside out and tries to make it into a mellow  love song! “Hey, I’ll be watching you, la-la-la.”

Recently, I’ve been hearing a lot of Bob Marley’s songs on cover playlists. The gourmet market where I shop has been playing this list frequently in the last month. It is bizarre to hear some young Asian female singing “I remember when we used to sit….in the government yard in Trenchtown.” (From Marley’s famous song ‘No Woman No Cry.’) That woman singing the song probably couldn’t even find Jamaica on a map. It was always bad enough to hear cover songs from the Carpenters, but now they’re covering Reggae and Grunge music!

Herein lies the rub: these companies pumping out cover versions of famous songs can copy the melody and the lyrics, but they can never duplicate or replicate the feeling or the soul of the song. They know this, and they don’t even try. They slow the beat down on every song and just tell the girl to sing it like it’s a lounge song. It simply doesn’t matter if the original feeling of the song is obliterated in the process. The cover music  industry managers do this to every song. Hell, I recently heard ‘Come as You Are’ the famous song from Nirvana played on a cover playlist. It’s not a very good song; it’s completely nonsensical  and the only reason it had success was Cobain’s hoarse and edgy voice and the thumping bass line.

I’ve asked various people over the last few years, both customers and restaurant managers, why they were playing and listening to cover music. After all, since the original versions of the songs are available, for free on the internet, why not just play the originals? Why listen to a 20-year-old Korean girl sing ‘No Woman No Cry’ when you can just play the entire ‘Exodus’ album from YouTube and hear Bob Marley sing it? I’ve never gotten a clear answer. The customers don’t pay any attention to what’s playing, and the managers always say something like, “Well, we like cover music. Her voice is so good. It’s so relaxing. The customers like it.” Or, “My boss likes this kind of music.”

It appears that cover music has taken over Asia. Not only are the original songs being lost, but the indigenous music of Asia has receded so far into the background that it, too, risks going extinct. I protest as much as I can, but I’m just one person. Unless people demand an end to this nonsense, this is what we will be living with in our future: Soul-less, corporate junk music which will continue to lobotomize the public into a permanent zombie state.

 

 

 

 

 

YouTube censorship heating up

I believe that YouTube is the best platform that we, the human race, have right now for spreading the truth. ‘Truthers,’ ‘The Truth community,’ and all truth seekers in general have found YouTube to be an absolutely invaluable tool for reaching large audiences around the world. However, as recent events have shown with crystal clarity, the owners of youtube and the shadow controllers behind them, are ready and willing to clamp down on channels that are spreading a little, er, too much truth.

YouTube is, of course, owned by Google, one of the most powerful corporations on Earth. Google works hand in hand with the CIA, NSA, the defense industry, and the shadow government and NWO in general. Google’s controllers are quite happy to have you uploading videos of pet tricks, cooking techniques, and boy bands from Korea. But, they are far less tolerant of channels that deal with serious content and hot-button political issues. More specifically, YouTube’s Zionist (read- Jewish) masters have zero tolerance for those who wish to question some of the sacred cows of 20th century history, such as the holocaust, WWII, Hitler, Israel, global Zionist power and the like.

Some of the prominent channels that have recently been shut down include peekay truth, ODD TV, EvaLion, Storm Clouds Gathering and goyim goddess. The excuses given by YouTube range from copyright infringement to ‘hate speech.’ The term ‘hate speech,’ if you didn’t already know, was invented by the Powers-That-Be to muzzle anyone who dares to question Jewish power. This was the same group that invented ‘Political Correctness.’  These terms are Orwellian in the extreme, as well as anti-intellectual, anti -free speech, and anti- critical thinking.. Any forward thinking person who embraces political correctness or who supports those who stifle free speech under the guise of stopping ‘hate speech’ need to do some serious research into the origins of societal control. Start with reading about Edward Bernays and the Tavistock Institute.

For those who use and rely on YouTube to spread the Truth, be always aware that the hand that giveth can also take away.  Have backup channels, as well as a blog and website so that when Big Brother comes to shut you down, you are ready to go to Plan B.

Addendum: YouTube had just launched a new feature called ‘YouTube heroes’ which blatantly and unashamedly encourages viewers to snitch on channels which espouse unpopular viewpoints and go against the prevailing propaganda, spouted by NWO mouthpieces such as CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, et al. They are getting desperate.

 

 

The zombie mainstream media

Like many writers and bloggers who reside in the ‘new’ or ‘alternative’ media universe, I regularly glance at a variety of mainstream websites, sometimes just for laughs and sometimes to see what sort of pablum they are feeding the gullible masses. In the past few months, almost every mainstream media (MSM) site that I look at has undergone a design update.  Perhaps not coincidentally, all of them now look exactly the same. Actually, we know it’s not a coincidence, since all of the dinosaur media are owned by a small handful of corporations.

Websites such as business insider, the weather channel, CNN, sfgate, and many more have adopted a design template that can only be described as bizarre and schizophrenic.  Ever since the old news organizations, i.e. The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox etc.   belatedly and grudgingly started websites and started putting energy and resources into their online presence, they have struggled to find an identity. The old newspaper design, with a front page, a business section, sports section, weather, and comics didn’t translate well onto a webpage. What to do?  The dinosaur newsrooms weren’t exactly bursting with creative types and savvy web designers, and they still aren’t. Basically, most of these organizations just tried to keep as much of the old format as possible. Instead of using this changeover to digital media as an opportunity to rethink the entire model, which in fact was long overdue, they simply made their websites to look as similar as possible to a newspaper.

In recent months, word must have come down from high above to shake things up a bit. The dinosaur media are continually losing viewership and readers and they will try to do anything to be relevant. Sadly, this is yet another case of putting lipstick on a pig. These organizations are so woefully out of touch, so removed from relevance and even reality itself, that no design change is going to save them.

They are now all using a white background and attaching large, color  rectangular photos to most stories. As you scroll down the site, anywhere from 50 to 80 percent of the screen is taken up with photos. Stories are rarely introduced without an accompanying photo. Headline writing has undergone a dramatic change in the last two years. Whereas in the old days, headlines were used to give the reader a basic summary of the article’s contents, nowadays they are used as ‘teasers,’ and are often phrased not as statements, but as questions. Common headlines now begin with phrases such as “You won’t believe..” and “Can you guess…”

Taking their cues from travel sites, the MSM throw around words like ‘amazing,’ ‘incredible,’ ‘stunning,’ and ‘awesome,’ with careless abandon. They are trying their best to debase these words completely, and in many respects already have.

Stories are juxtaposed without rhyme or reason. So-called hard news, soft news, trivia, sports, weather, gossip, advice, restaurant reviews, real estate tips and much , much more are assembled in a mishmash fashion. The reader can scroll endlessly through hundreds of stories before coming to the bottom of the page. The MSM is trying to be all things to all people by throwing putty against the wall and hoping that something sticks. Lots and lots of photos, catchy but inane headlines, a wide variety of stories written at a third grade level and and a hip facade are just some of their tactics.

Want to find out what’s happening in the business world and get some ‘insider’ tips? Well, don’t go to www.businessinsider.com. Here are the top stories today: ‘Solar eclipse 2015- the best photos from across Europe…’ The 30 most eligible men and women in San Francisco’….’48 tips on becoming more powerful’…and ‘The best pizza in every state.’  That’s just a sampling from the first page. What the hell does this site have to do with business? What a joke. It’s all fluff, inanity, and distraction, filled with lots of celebrity name-dropping. Nutrition-less mind candy. But hey, the site looks really cool!

The mainstream media, aka the dinosaur media, aka the zombie, living-dead media are an embarrassment. They have no shame, no scruples,  and no integrity. They continue to insist on their relevance, long after they have been thoroughly discredited.

The smartphone is not a tool, it’s a drug

When it comes to smart phones, the question must be asked: who is the master and who is the slave?  Do you control your smart phone, or is it the other way around?

Although most owners of smart phones will laugh good-naturedly when queried about this and admit, “Yeah, I’m addicted to my iphone,” they are unwilling to look at the extent and ramifications of their addiction full in the face.

Most of my teenage students no longer bother to talk to one another before class, during breaks or after class. They file into the classroom one by one, take a seat as distant from the other students as possible, and then take out their gadgets and sullenly scroll thru the screen, thumbs working hard. Often, I will a half-dozen or more students in the room, and you can hear a pin drop, it is so silent. Nothing happening but eyes glued to screens.

Less than 20 years ago when the first crude cell phones began appearing, there was at least some, but not much, discussion about when it was appropriate to interrupt a conversation to take a call. That brief discussion has ended and it is now taken for granted that it is permissible to answer the phone or a text message at any time, anywhere, for any reason.  It is acceptable to interrupt a deep and intense conversation between a mother/daughter, father/son, boss/employee, boyfriend/girlfriend, best friends, grandfather/grandson, husband/wife, and other relationship one can think of simply to answer a call. Sure, you can still ask, politely, for the person you are conversing with to put away their phone for the duration of the conversation, but be prepared for strange  and sometimes downright hostile looks from them.

Most of the phone carriers where I live in Southeast Asia do not provide voice messaging. There is nowhere for someone to leave a message if you do not answer the phone. But really, who needs such a service nowadays?  The phone is with you all the time, and when it rings you answer it. Period. If someone calls and you don’t pick up, they assume you have mysteriously disappeared or perhaps died. They don’t even follow up the missed call with a text message. The notion that someone might  purposely decline to answer a call is inconceivable to people now, especially the under-35 generation.

It’s humorous to observe people when the phone is in their pocket or handbag and a call comes in. They  immediately spring into action, almost like they are in a fight-or-flight response. They appear to think that if the phone buzzes more than once or twice, it is an insult to the person who is calling.  There is nothing casual at all about the way they reach for their smartphone. Their master – the phone-  is calling, and they reach for it with the utmost sense of urgency.

The common scene now at restaurants, bars , and cafes is for hipsters and pseudo hipsters to have a whole arsenal of digital gadgets spread out on the table before them.  I recently sat across from a young twenty-something girl at a cafe who was so desperate to appear cool that she took no chances. She had not one, but two smartphones in front of her, plus a tablet. She hid her face behind oversized sunglasses and earphones. She chain smoked marlboro cigarettes and drank aspartame-laced Diet Coke. She had a notebook with some scribbles open on the table, but never once touched it. The Lost Generation on full display.

 

 

The NFL and CNN spearhead the charge to destroy grammar

Readers of George Orwell will recall that one of the primary methods to destroy people’s mental and intellectual capacity that he described  in his novel ‘1984’ was the destruction of language itself. Government in Orwell’s  dystopian future either removes all meaning from words and concepts or inverts them completely to mean the opposite of their true meaning. Hence, ‘War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.’

It would make sense that governments and their globalist  overlords in the NWO would desire to destroy grammar and logic along with word meanings and concepts. Hence, we witness today the rapid degeneration of grammar in the media, academia, and politics.

A couple of years ago, I began to notice a trend in the media that has become so prevalent now that it is not even commented upon: the disappearance of the paragraph. Go to any online news story published by a mainstream media outlet or even an independent blogger and you see a never-ending sequence of one or two sentence paragraphs. The paragraph form that has been taught to students for countless generations, and which is still taught in most schools today, has been abandoned entirely. We teachers have always taught students that an average paragraph length is four to five sentences with some being shorter and some being longer. Now, so-called journalists, writers and bloggers just tap the space key after every sentence or two. Articles and stories have no rhythm, cohesion or flow. Sure, some of them have good information and some are even entertaining to read, but the lack of the paragraph and transitional phrases severely reduces an article’s readability  and illustrates  the undisciplined writing that is so widespread in news media today. In turn, this undisciplined writing feeds the dumbing down of the population.

Another extremely disturbing trend is the replacement of the past tense, past perfect and even future tense with the all-encompassing present tense. Again, I noticed this for the first time a couple of years ago, especially amongst sports commentators. Now, I see it everywhere in the mass news media, including old reliable CNN.  For example, instead of saying the grammatically correct, “If he had caught that ball, they would have won the game,” the commentator will simply say, “If he catches that ball, they win.” What the hell is that? Is it simple laziness, stupidity, or something more conspiratorial? Likewise, when discussing the future, instead of writing, “Will he return next year?”, journalists now write, “Does he return?” And another will respond, “Yes, I think he returns next year,” instead of “I think he WILL return next year.”

We’re now taking our grammar cues from these guys?

I find it hard to believe that so many writers and journalists have forgotten the past and future tense so suddenly. Perhaps they are being told by their editors to ‘simplify’ their language so as to hold on to as many viewers and readers as possible. Regardless, the result is the same- a massive evisceration of grammar to go along with the destruction of words and concepts.

Another one that bothers me is the use of the ‘historical present.’ If you are not familiar with that term, this is when a writer or narrator will consistently use the simple present tense when describing a sequence of historical events. Some of my favorite historical documentaries use this convenience , and it perplexes me and bothers me to no end. What is the point of it? I surmise that the editors and writers feel that using the present tense gives their documentary a more visceral feel and immediacy  than using the  past tense,  but is that really true? Does it sound better to say, “As the battle rages, many soldiers die,” instead of “As the battle raged on, many soldiers died”?  For me, the use of the present tense here does nothing to heighten the impact of the sentence.

Another strange recent trend is taking about oneself using the second person. It’s weird enough to use the third person, but the second person sounds especially bizarre. Athletes again are at the forefront of this trend. A reporter asks, “How do you feel about losing the game today?” and the athlete responds, “Well, YOU just do the best YOU can,,,,,,YOU go out and fight hard, and hope YOU get the result YOU want, but today it didn’t work out….”

Huh?

These are not the idle gripes of a ‘Grammar Nazi.’ These are issues that everyone who speaks English, cares about education, and follows the workings of the NWO should be concerned about. Grammar matters, as it is the foundation for logic and rhetoric which are in turn the building blocks for the Quadrivium:

Abused words: consensus, anarchy, genocide, contractor, home

George Orwell warned humanity in his novel 1984 that totalitarian governments of the future would mangle language to such an extent that the original meanings of words would become lost as history was rewritten, and words would at times even come to connote the exact opposite of their original meaning.

Pick up any random copy of a business press release, a mainstream newspaper,  mass market magazine, or a government document, and you will be confronted with this mangling of language on a daily basis. The examples could fill an entire book, but here are some of the most egregious:

1) consensus

There are instances when dictionaries cause more confusion than clarity. Such is the case with ‘consensus.’ Most dictionaries define it as general agreement. But what the heck does the word ‘general’ mean in the definition? That’s open to interpretation. One dictionary says that it is an agreement shared by a majority while another says that it is an agreement shared by ALL. So, are we to say that consensus means 51% or greater, or does it mean 100% agreement?  Most writers, reporters and bloggers today use it to mean a majority but when I was living in communities we always understood the word to mean agreement by everybody, no exceptions. Also, the phrases ‘growing consensus’ and ‘general consensus’  are meaningless. Authors, speakers and propagandists who attempt to gain traction for a theory or idea that they are trying to sell often use this word  in an argumentum ad populum.  This type of argument says ‘the majority believe it, so it must be true.’ Furthermore, it sounds more official and learned to say ‘there is a growing consensus’ than to say, ‘a majority of people believe…’

2) anarchy

In my lifetime, no word has been more vilified and shredded than ‘anarchy.’ The word traces its roots back to ancient Greek.  ‘An’  means  without and ‘arkhos’   or ‘archon’ means ruler. So, anarchy means without rulers or without government. An anarchist is someone who doesn’t believe in government. Or, to put it in a more active form, an anarchist is someone who believes in ‘self-rule.’ Anarchism refers to the political theory while anarchy refers to the actual practice.

Over the centuries,  further definitions were added on to the original. The second, third and fourth entries in dictionaries  gave ‘disorder, chaos, confusion,’ and other scary words to associate with ‘no government.’

In the years that I have been reading and studying the media, mostly in the USA, I have NEVER seen anarchy used in any context but chaos, confusion, and violence.  As soon as a riot breaks out somewhere, either as a result of a natural disaster or economic conditions , you can bet your life savings that a government spokesperson and television  announcer will proclaim that there is a great danger of ‘anarchy.’

This is a pretty sad state of affairs, and it is nothing more than conditioning and programming of the masses. Governments have always been fearful of the idea of anarchy and have always tried to conflate anarchy and chaos. There was once a time, even in the USA, not too long ago when anarchy and anarchism were talked about seriously. Those days are long gone, and now we can only watch the spectacle of talking heads on television frothing at the mouth and shouting ‘anarchy!’

 

3) genocide

Few words in the English language can arouse  emotion so quickly as ‘genocide.’ The word came into popular usage after World War II. Dictionaries, again,  can steer  us off course. Most state that it is ‘the extermination of a national, racial, ethnic, or cultural group.’  Does ‘extermination’ mean 100% of those members, a majority,  or just a large number? The word has become so politicized now, and is such a favorite of dictators, propagandists, and speechwriters, that anytime a few thousand, hundred or dozen get killed- from a population of millions- someone is screaming ‘genocide.’ Not only is this not accurate and purposefully inflammatory, but it degrades the memory of groups and tribes who truly have been exterminated.  Certainly, when large numbers of people are killed, we should mourn them, but rarely does the killing  warrant the use of the word ‘genocide.’ Even many otherwise excellent and insightful political writers whom I read regularly abuse this word.

4) contractor

Welcome to the USA, post 9/11! Our government ‘leaders’ have dropped all pretense and shame, and now proudly proclaim WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM  IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. Such is the mentality of government warmongers and war profiteers that mercenaries are now called by the politically neutral and benign word  ‘contractors.’ Even the word ‘mercenary’ does not truly do justice to the reality of  murderers- for hire. Nowadays, our mainstream media blithely and sickeningly will only use contractor when talking about the thousands of Blackwater hit-men roaming the mountains of Afghanistan and the streets of Iraq. One can imagine if a reporter from the New York Times were to attempt to write ‘mercenary.’ He would quickly be reprimanded and reminded that news organizations don’t use that language anymore. The CIA says so.

5) home

I’ve often wondered how and why the word ‘house’ has almost completely disappeared from the English lexicon. As George Carlin so eloquently said, a home can be anywhere -the street, your friends couch, the road- and is more likened to a state of mind than a physical, tangible object. Most people are familiar with the idiom, “Home is where the heart is.” A house is a building,  a dwelling that is usually built by a corporation and meant to be sold to a family or individual so that one day they can call it a home. These days, many people don’t even want to do that; they simply buy it as in ‘investment’, a profit making opportunity.

Pick up a newspaper, magazine, pamphlet, hand-out, or book and try to find the word house these days. It is almost impossible to find. Marketers and PR hacks  discovered way back in the days of Edward Bernays that people resonated with the word home , much more than house . You are far more likely to put down a lot of money to buy a home than you are to buy a house. It all comes down to marketing.

News reporters have been sucked up into this nonsense. How many times have we seen a helicopter flying high over a devastated region after a tornado or hurricane and the reporter looks below at the shattered structures and houses and says, “There are so many destroyed homes…” Selling disaster for ratings.
